Western Books
Description
French leather bound 18th century books.
Condition
Detached covers and broken sewing
Treatment
Treatment aimed to restore the books' functionality whilst retaining original features as much as possible (see pictures below). Spine received Japanese tissue facing in order to secure brittle leather during its lifting. Spine carefully lifted and cleaned of some of the residual glue responsible for its stiffness and consequent breakage. Spine is covered with very strong and durable linen, which is toned to match the colour of the book's leather. This covering acts as a support for the remedial sewing and as an attachment for the covers. The fragmented original spine covering is adhered onto the new linen spine.
